TELUS

SmartEnergy

TELUS is Canada’s premiere telecommunications company offering internet, cable, and phone services to 18 million Canadians.

From August ‘23–April ‘24, I led the design of SmartEnergy, the home energy management portion of TELUS’ smart home app. Working towards a Canadian beta launch, I collaborated with product managers and engineers to define and deliver the must-have features for launch.

Strategy

Working with TELUS’ smart home ecosystem, SmartEnergy helps customers save money by monitoring their energy usage and then recommending energy-saving smart home automations.

Additionally, customers can receive monetary rewards by participating in energy saving events which automatically power down select devices during times of energy grid stress.

Process

Energy monitoring apps typically report usage in kilowatts; however, after initial concept testing we quickly realized that SmartEnergy needed to focus on reporting energy consumption in dollar units, as kilowatts held little meaning for customers.

In order to calculate energy consumption accurately, we needed a simple way to gather some basic information about the customer’s home.

To accomplish this, I conducted design workshops, wireframed solutions, and created design concepts to align the team around immediate and future approaches for gathering home details.
